The economy may be in a slump, but Christmas spirit in East Peoria is not. The city’s annual Festival of Lights has been as popular as ever, officials say. The unflagging patronage of one festival attraction, the drive-through Winter Wonderland light display, has likely been boosted by the East Peoria City Council’s decision to reduce the per-vehicle fee from $10 to $5 Monday through Thursday. Region recovers from white Christmas
The public seems to have accepted the first test of Pekin’s new money-saving snow removal system. City crews began plowing side streets today in accordance with the city’s new policy, designed to avoid overtime hours and save money. Public Works Director Joe Wuellner said crews began laying salt on Christmas and the day after, and then plowed the main roads and hills in town Sunday. Full Story;
Holiday Inn owner looks to reopen this summer
Contractors are currently restoring and cleaning the fire-damaged Holiday Inn Express in Pekin before reconstruction work begins in earnest next month. Owner Atul Patel said he hopes to reopen the hotel sometime in July. “When they start doing the restructuring in January, (it will take) four or five months to complete the job,” he said. Full Story;
Pekin Police receptionist set to retire after 44 years
When young children crossed the street under Etta Martis’ watch, she made sure to fasten their coats and caps. Martis and her friend, Mabel Brantley, were crossing guards. When it was apparent that children came from needy families, Martis and Brantley would give those children food, cookies and gifts and tell them to take them home to their mothers when the other children were not watching. Funeral home soon to have crematory
Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes LLC will soon own and operate its own crematory. The new building, located just outside the city’s boundaries near the intersection Veterans Drive and Broadway, is one of the first to take advantage of the four-lane highway. Voting law proceeding despite concerns
Voting this February could be a little more complicated.
